Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Travel to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your driver-guide, who will brief you about the trip. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a short city drive through Kigali before heading to Volcanoes National Park.

The journey offers scenic views of Rwanda’s hills, green farmlands, and local people working or walking along the roadside. You will arrive in the evening, check in at your luxury Rwanda gorilla lodge, and rest in preparation for the next day.

Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Center

Wake up to a cool morning and enjoy breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing about golden monkey trekking. After the briefing, enter the forest to search for these playful primates. Golden monkey trekking is generally easier than gorilla trekking because the monkeys often stay in one place for some time.

When you find them, you will see them jumping through the trees and sometimes coming very close to you. Spend one hour watching them and taking pictures before returning to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Center, a place that showcases the culture and traditions of Rwanda’s three ethnic groups; the Twa, Hutu, and Tutsi. Enjoy traditional music, dances, and local food. It is a wonderful way to experience the culture of Rwanda before returning to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking

After an early breakfast, go to the park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla trekking by the ranger guide. You will be divided into groups of eight trekkers, which is the maximum number allowed to visit one gorilla family per day.

Enter the forest to search for the mountain gorillas. The trek may take you through thick vegetation and uneven terrain, and you may need to hold onto branches for support. When you finally meet the gorillas, all the effort becomes worthwhile. Spend one unforgettable hour watching them as they feed, play, and interact.

You can take pictures as long as your camera has no flash. After the trek, return to the park headquarters and then to your lodge for lunch, relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Day 4: Travel Back to Kigali

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and drive back to Kigali for your return flight. This marks the end of your 4-day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey safari.
